How to Study Healthcare While Working: Tips for Busy Adults

By All Health Training
October 24, 2025

Balancing work, life, and study can feel overwhelming — especially when you're thinking about starting a healthcare qualification. But with the right plan and a flexible provider, it is possible.

At All Health Training (AHT), we understand mature‑age learners and working adults.

Here are practical tips for doing healthcare training in Victoria while keeping your job and other commitments going strong.

What Does Flexible Study Look Like at AHT?

Before diving into strategies, it helps to know what flexible study means at All Health Training:

  • AHT offers a Flexible Learning Program that lets you study theory online, at your own pace, while also attending mandatory practical sessions.

  • Courses like the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (HLT33115), Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing or Disability) are available via flexible or blended delivery — letting you organise your study in a way that works around your work hours.

  • Flexible duration: for HLT33115, flexible learning allows up to 18 months to complete the qualification.

Knowing this structure means you can plan better. Now, here are tips to make it work for you.

Tips for Studying Healthcare While Working

  1. Make a clear timetable
Carve out specific times each week for online theory, assessments and workshops. Even 1‑2 consistent hours daily adds up. If your work schedule changes, plan ahead.

  2. Use flexible learning to your advantage
With AHT’s flexible programs, you can complete theory content when it suits you. Early mornings, evenings, weekends — find the gaps. Practical sessions are fixed, so block those dates in early.

  3. Stay organised with tools & reminders
Use a digital calendar and set reminders for assessment due dates, practical workshop days, placement deadlines. Keep all study materials in one place (AHT Online platform, digital files) so nothing gets lost.

  4. Communicate with your employer
Let your employer know about placement blocks or practical session days. Sometimes you can negotiate shifts or take leave in blocks. AHT suggests arranging work or family care so placement weeks are manageable.

  5. Tap into AHT’s support systems
The trainers are there to help — for clarifying assessment tasks, catching up if you fall behind, or coaching through practical skills. AHT’s student administration is also ready to help with payment plans or funding eligibility.

  6. Look after yourself
Studying + working in healthcare settings can be physically and mentally taxing. Prioritise rest, good nutrition, breaks. It’s okay to slow down and catch your breath. Asking for help (from family, friends, classmates) can make a big difference.

What to Choose: Part‑Time or Flexible Learning

Here are factors to weigh when deciding your mode:

Option Good If You… Things to Check
Flexible / Self‑Paced Learning Need to study around irregular work hours, family, or geographical constraints. Want control over pace. Do you have stable internet access and good digital literacy? Can you commit to attending required practical workshops and placements?
Part‑Time / Blended (Scheduled Class Days + Online) Prefer more structure, set class or prac times, regular face‑to‑face interaction with trainers. Check if class times clash with work shifts; plan ahead for placement blocks.

What AHT Offers to Help Make It Feasible for Busy Adults

To support working adults, All Health Training provides:

  • Flexible payment plans so cost isn’t a barrier.

  • Smaller class sizes and personalised attention so you won’t get lost in the crowd.

  • Strong job outcomes — approximately 80‑90% of students gain employment during or shortly after completing courses.

  • Multiple locations (Blackburn & Narre Warren) and online materials helping with accessibility around Victoria.

Flexible Study Doesn’t Mean Lower Quality

You still get:

  • The same nationally recognised qualification whether you do flexible or scheduled delivery.

  • Mandatory practical placements and hands‑on workshops.

  • Real‑world units of competency (e.g. infection control, patient transport, assisting movement) that are highly relevant to health jobs in Victoria.
