In Australia and many countries, drug testing which is required for legal purposes (for example; workplace testing, where a positive test involves a penalty or dismissal), requires confirmatory testing to be performed. In Australia, this would require compliance with Australian Standard AS 4308.
Commonly known in the pathology sector as 4308 training, AS/NZS 4308:2008 Procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantitation of drugs of abuse in urine OR it's official unit of competency name under the HLT Health Training Package release 3.0, the HLTPAT005 – Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing course is a
nationally recognised unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare client and equipment and collect specimens via urine, saliva and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drugs of abuse testing.
This unit of competency is highly sort after in the pathology sector and can open many further job opportunities, so why not fully equip yourself!
The course consists of one (1) unit of competency:
This unit covers the following:
- Detection of drugs in urine and saliva
- Detection of alcohol via breath test
- Legal and ethical obligations
- Collector requirements including documentation
- AS/NZS Standards 4308:2008 4760:2019
- Common non-compliances
Students will be asked to participate in a urine, saliva and breath test as part of the simulated practical session.
Entry Requirements
This is an open entry program of study with participants needing to read, write and communicate in English to a level to perform the job.
- Students will be required to complete a “Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)” evaluation to determine suitability for the course
- Students are required to be able to access a computer, internet, printer and moderate digital technology skills to conduct online and virtual course requirements
- Locations: Blackburn, Narre Warren & Preston or onsite
- Class Size: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, workshops will run with a maximum of 6 students only
- Duration: 1 day (9am – 4.30pm)
- Delivery Mode: Classroom & Blended Learning
Practical experience and assessment
Assessment is conducted in 2 phases.
- Written Assessment – completed by the student as self-paced learning. This assessment book is required to be submitted to our Head Office 2 weeks prior to your workshop date and assessed as “Satisfactory”.
- Workshop attendance simulated practical – the workshop includes revision of theory & simulated practicals of urine, saliva and breath testing
