Patient Services Assistant (PSA): A Career in Healthcare

Patient services assistants (PSAs) play a vital role in the healthcare industry. They provide support to patients and their families, and they help to ensure that hospitals and other healthcare facilities run smoothly.

 

To work as a PSA, you must have a minimum of a HLT33115 – Certificate III In Health Services Assistance. This qualification will teach you the skills you need to be successful in this role, such as:

  • Communication skills
  • Customer service skills
  • Infection control procedures
  • Patient handling
  • Basic medical terminology

As a PSA, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks, such as:

 

  • Assisting with movement ​
  • Attending MET (Medical Emergency) calls​
  • Food service ​
  • Clinical cleaning​ - Cleaning and maintaining patient rooms
  • May also undertake additional tasks including linen handling ​
  • Waste handling ​
  • Handling of medical gas cylinders​
  • Transporting patients between departments

PSAs work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. They typically work part-time or full-time hours, and they may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
